People I Love : Number 3 THE GIRL WHO WAS COUNCELLED She appeared young and vulnerable, a prostitute from ¡°Front Street.¡± A long line of bars running past the main gate of the US Army Ascom Area Command. Here 6,000 young girls plied their trade, driven by destitution and starvation. Many sold themselves in bondage to a ¡°Mama San¡± for the loan of a lump sum of money, which they sent home to pay for a parent¡¯s medical care or an elder brother¡¯s education. ¡° No one has greater love than this, to lay down one¡¯s life for one¡¯s friends,¡± Jesus said (Jn 15, 13). He must have thought of our Bu Pyeong girls when He told the Pharisees, ¡°¡¦prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you¡± (Mt. 21, 31). He was a hard eyed American soldier, who¡¯d persuaded the girl to live with him by proposing marriage¡± in the ¡®70¡¯s the G. I. had to obtain a letter from his unit Chaplain saying he¡¯d been counseled. In Bu Pyeong, the Catholic Chaplains sent Catholic soldiers to me for processing of the Catholic pre-marriage documents before they signed the letter certifying the G. I. had been counseled. I told the soldier, ¡°Let me first explain to your girl friend in Korean what this is all about.¡± Then I turned to the girl. ¡°You know many G. I.¡¯s who want to live with a Korean girl propose of departure from Korea, and suddenly disappear.¡± She nodded her head. She had friends to whom this had happened. I went on in Korean. ¡° I¡¯m going to ask this man for a $10 US deposit. This is not a charge. All I ask is that if, while I¡¯m processing your marriage papers, writing to the States for his baptismal certificate, parents¡¯ testimony, etc., you decide not to marry, that he come and tell me so I don¡¯t go on doing unnecessary work. In that case I return his $10 deposit. Now¡¦and this is important. I¡¯ve learned that if a soldier really intends to some excuse not to give me the $10 you can be pretty sure he¡¯s lying to you and gas no intention of marrying you.¡± The girl locked at me. ¡°He¡¯s got a lot of money with him,¡± she said. ¡°He was paid just yesterday.¡± I then explained to the man in English that I required a $10 deposit because so many G. I.¡¯s who came to arrange marriage never came back. ¡°If you decide not to marry, just come and tell me and I refund your $10.¡± The girl watched his face closely. ¡°That sounds fair, Father,¡± the G. I. answered ¡°But I¡¯ll have to bring you the $10 later on. We haven¡¯t been paid yet this month and I have no money with me today.¡± The girl locked sharply at the man¡¯s face, then she locked at me, and put her head down. She¡¯d been counseled. I never saw either of them again. Several days after this, in the absences of the Catholic Chaplain, I was called late at night to minister to a dying soldier at the US 121 Evacuation Hospital. To reach the main gate I had to walk past the bars of ¡°Front Street.¡± As I approached a bar when scantily clad girls were soliciting customers one girl called, ¡°Hey, fella, you wanna¡¦..?¡± She never finished because two girls suddenly yanked her back inside the door, and I heard angry voices. ¡°That¡¯s Father Tai! You don¡¯t call out to him. He¡¯s OUR PROEST!¡± It was the first I knew I¡¯d become Chaplain to the 6,000 prostitutes of ¡°Front Street,¡± a position I held for the next several years.
