People I Love : Number 4

                                                                                 THREE STUDENTS

He was a young American soldier, eyes full of hope, one of ¡°McNamara¡¯s 40,000,¡± the boys who couldn¡¯t read, but were conscripted into the Viet Nam Era Army anyway. His Chaplain had sent him to me. ¡°There¡¯s just one thing I want out of my Army service,¡± he explained. ¡° I want to learn to read.¡± I wanted to teach him, but just couldn¡¯t take so many hours from my missionary work and my own struggle to learn Korean. He later told me he¡¯d found a buddy, a fellow G. I. who volunteered to teach him. I hope he did. He deserved to learn.

I met the 17 year old shoveling chicken maure in a home for ¡° mixed bloods,¡± the abandoned children of American soldiers and Korean girls, citizens of neither the US nor of Korea. Hos hair was red, his cheeks creamy white and freckled. It seemed strange that he was speaking Korean. But his Irish eyes shone with pride looked about me, ¡°I¡¯m learning the chicken raising business.¡± I looked about me. This boy was shoveling chicken manure nothing else! My heart still aches for him wherever he is.

¡°Father, I¡¯d like to invite you to dinner at the NCO Clob tomorrow. I¡¯m having a little celebration.¡± The gray haired Master Sergent had visited me frequently on his off-duty time. He¡¯d seen many years of Army service and had fought in three wars. His shoulders unconsciously straightened with pride as he explained, ¡°It¡¯s taken me almost a full twenty years. But I¡¯ve achieved my life time dream. I¡¯ve gotten my School Diploma !¡±

I think of my own Doctorate in Theology and my two Master¡¯s Degrees, all achieved at someone else¡¯s expense and while someone else supported me as I studied.
